Samuel Byck（Sean Penn 饰）是一个四十多岁的家具推销员，他厌恶欺骗，并因此和哥哥关系破裂，但是工作要求他不得的学会谎言；在生活上，他和妻子长期分居，每个星期只有一次机会见到自己的三个孩子。 Samuel Byck有一个做汽车修理工的黑人朋友Bonny Simmons (Don Cheadle 饰)，Samuel一直想和他合伙做上门修理轮胎的小生意，而尼克松总统许诺推行的小额工业贷款计划给他们的未来点燃了一丝希望。 Samuel向政府机关提交申请后，开始是长达两个多月的漫长等待，期间，妻子正式提出离婚，工作也丢掉了，一切越来越糟糕。 贷款的落空破灭了他最后的希望。Samuel偷走了Bonny的抢，准备劫持一架客机撞向白宫，和尼克松同归于尽，用这种决绝的方式让世界注意他的存在。
