17岁的职业将棋手桐山零是一个很有潜力的将棋新星。在桐山零很小的时候，他的家人就死于一场车祸，他被父亲的好朋友也是一个职业将棋手收养，并和养父的儿子女儿一起接受将棋培训。随着年龄的增长，桐山零的棋艺逐渐超越哥哥姐姐们，得到了养父的更多关注，却也受到了其他人的排斥，矛盾逐渐加深，于是他不得不搬出去住，尝试独立生活。孤独的他后来遇到了川本三姐妹，这家人很关心他，完全把他当一家人来保护和对待。在和这家人的相处中，桐山零不断成长，收获了长久缺失的爱。同时，在不断参加比赛的过程中，零也结识了许多优秀而不同的职业将棋手，和他们的对弈，让他逐渐学会通过将棋去了解他人，与这些将棋手的友谊也让他逐渐打开心扉，改变了对将棋的态度，也重新找回了自己。
