冯喆电影《桃花扇》根据欧阳予倩先生的剧本《桃花扇》拍摄的。他以清代孔尚任的传奇剧本《桃花扇》为蓝本，改编成京剧《桃花扇》，借古喻今，流露了强烈的民族意识和爱国主义思想。一九四七年，他又将京剧《桃花扇》改编成话剧，突出了正义与邪恶，爱国主义与卖国主义的思想斗争，塑造了一位富有反抗性格，具有坚贞爱国情操的风尘女子李香君的形象。而孔尚任的《桃花扇》是借李香君和侯朝宗的离合之情，写南明王朝的兴亡之感。李、侯之间的爱情描写，不同于以往的《西厢记》、《牡丹亭》，也不同于当时与孔尚任比肩的洪升的《长生殿》，除了描写男女双方在才华上、容貌上互相倾慕外，还在政治态度上互相影响。显然思想性是以前的儿女风情戏所少有的。尤其结尾不落窠臼 ，打破了大团圆的结局，使得该作品意境深远，独树一帜。王丹凤饰秦淮名妓李香君，冯喆饰男主角明末四公子之一复社中坚侯朝宗。《桃花扇》是冯喆最后一部电影，多年的艺术积累使其演技达到炉火纯青的阶段。可惜此片也直接导致他后来早夭，艺术生命就终结在42岁。近来获金鸡奖中国电影百年百星，中国电影诞生九十周年评选奖。
