本故事发生在公元10191年，一个遥远的未来世界，那时人类的文明是由帝国、垄断恒星间运输的宇宙协会、掌握行星领土的领主共同支撑。沙丹四世是已知宇宙的帝王，他凭借索多长突击队控制着帝国，使反抗势力不敢妄动。李托亚崔迪公爵是沙丹四世的表弟，因其势力威胁到帝王而被送到了荒凉的沙的行星--凯勒丹。当地出产一种神秘的香料，由于可以医治“老人脖而成为帝国的最大财源。它为什么这么重要呢？因为太空飞行员经受长时间的孤寂，反应力会下降，甚至得老人病，为了维持星际运输，香料是必不可少的商品。控制凯勒丹大部分香料开采工作的哈肯尼家族，在皇帝的授意下消灭亚崔迪家族，亚崔迪公爵战败自杀，其子保罗和母亲杰西嘉逃到沙漠中请求土著人——费瑞曼人的保护。由于在费瑞曼人中流传的倍内盖世立特教派的传说，保罗被认为是救世主——摩狄，而成为费瑞曼人的领袖。在使用一种密药后，保罗得到一种预知能力，大大加强了力量。在沙漠的生活中，保罗娶了费瑞曼姑娘加妮，并将亚崔迪家族的战斗技术传授给费瑞曼人。最终，保罗控制了香料，并组织费瑞曼人向全宇宙进行圣战，获得帝国的绝对权力。
