1937年在中国时局动荡的时刻，时任德国西门子公司驻华代表及纳粹党驻华负责人的汉堡商人约翰·拉贝，亲眼目睹了日军进入南京后惨无人道的屠杀。他不顾让他立刻回国的命令，联合了十几位外国传教士、医生、商人等共同建立“南京国际安全区”，前后共拯救了大约25万中国平民。拉贝的人道主义行动引起了日军的强烈不满，他们多次试图冲击国际安全区，拉贝顶住巨大的压力，坚决保护所有进入安全区的普通百姓，他也因此被中国人称为活菩萨。在1938年回到德国后，他公开发表了自己的日记，控诉日军的残暴行径，引起了舆论一片哗然并因此遭到了纳粹的迫害。纳粹当局因害怕南京大屠杀的真相曝光，将《拉贝日记》列为禁书，并关押了拉贝本人...
