雷锋是中国人民解放军某部运输班长，优秀共产党员。星期天，雷锋和班里的战士王大力、吴奎到公园散步，遇到学生们在李老师带领下跳集体舞。雷锋在李老师和学生们的邀请下给同学们讲了自己童年的故事。雷锋的家乡在湖南农村，解放前他的爸爸被日本鬼子打死了，12岁的哥哥做工累死了，小弟弟在妈妈的怀里饿死了，妈妈因交不起租被地主家的少爷逼得上吊死了，全家只剩下雷锋一人。同学们被雷锋一家人的悲惨遭遇所感动，同时受到深刻的教育。又是一个星期天，雷锋因感冒到卫生连去看病，路上经过一个工地，工地广播说是砖供应不上了，雷锋连忙参加了工地的运砖行列。广播站的记者采访他时，他不肯讲出自己的名字。他参加义务劳动的事迹，在工地广播出去的时候，整个工地的工人都受到极大鼓舞，劳动热情顿时高涨起来。在雷锋回连队的路上，下起大雨，雨中他听到远处传来孩子的哭声，只见一个老大娘一手拿着包袱，一手拉着个孩子。原来大娘要去20里以外的朱家屯看闺女，天黑又没车，十分着急。雷锋不由分说，抱起孩子一直把大娘送到朱家屯，大娘回到家，刚要转身说谢谢，雷锋早已不见踪影。雷锋回到连队已经很晚了，但指导员和战士们都没睡。原来工地的老大爷在雷锋衣袋中...
