瑞恩（克里斯·埃文斯 饰)和朋友正在度假中，刚买的视频手机引来朋友一片啧啧称赞。可才上了车，他就接到了奇怪电话——一位陌生女子（金·贝辛格 饰）号称自己一家被绑架，丈夫儿子会先后被绑匪杀掉，求他救救他们一家。 以为是恶作剧的瑞恩本想置之不理，但电话中的求救声却让他没法拒绝，而绑匪声音的出现更不容他迟疑。原来陌生女子叫杰西卡，是个高中教师，她在自己被绑架之地发现了一部老式拨号电话，刚想拨打便被绑匪用棒球杆击碎。可她偷偷地在绑匪走后想方设法地把电话拼凑了起来，试著拨了一个号码，而这号码这是瑞恩的。 此刻的瑞恩只能一边用手机和她保持联系，一边驾车在洛杉矶四处游走，试图阻挠绑匪的计划。同时，得知了情况的警方也开始了搜索，但唯一能稍微和现场同步的瑞恩必须尽一切努力，如果手机信号没了，恐怕一切就已晚矣。但诸多困难齐齐涌来，他行吗？
