一九三七年，在阎锡山统治的山西某村，地主杨有德和儿子杨耀祖勾结官府，强行霸占农民赵志忠的土地。赵志忠被逼得服毒自杀。他的儿子赵铁柱放火烧了地主的房子，远走他乡。铁柱的妻子怕杨家报复，也离开了乡土，把儿子黑蛋改名石头，到处乞讨为生。十年后，石头参加了八路军，在营部当通讯员。营长赵钢就是他离别多年的亲身父亲铁柱，但他们却互不相识。家乡解放后，父子俩才彼此相认。一家得到团圆。
