上海，某医院，30岁的脑外科医生周淑云正在做一个复杂的手术，这也是医院里第一例此类型手术。只要成功，一向都是医院顶尖级人才的周淑云就会成为全院最年轻的副教授。并能分到一套住房，从此摆脱租房的日子，真正成为在上海有家的上海人。然而事与愿违，手术失败了。随之而来的除了挫败感，还有周围人的冷嘲热讽。周淑云明白，自已一向盛气凌人，如今那些昔日被她踩在脚下的人纷纷落井下石。周淑云冷眼看着这一切，心生退意。 周淑云在整理旧照片的时候发现了十年前初恋男友高俊写给自己的信，信中提到一个叫做王家坝的地方，周淑云仔细回想，终于想起医院正在组建一支下乡的医疗队，地点就是王家坝。为了避开医院里众人的目光，周淑云毅然报名，来到了王家坝。 面对简陋的医疗环境，一向心高气傲的周淑云诸多挑剔，她从心里看不起这个地方，来这也只是为了逃避。然而，面对她各种各样的无理要求，热情憨厚的水生却想方设法的满足她，并不断的帮她解决和村民之间的矛盾…… 村里的疯子姜四从树上摔下来，需要手术，而周淑云却以医疗条件不足为理由，坚决把他送千里迢迢到了县城的医院，也因此差点耽误了治疗时间
