李紫庸在英国留学8年后带着英国籍妻儿回到中国老家——山西运城。 家中老父李景修乃富甲一方的晋商，和初来乍到的洋媳妇无论礼数习性格格不入。时值民国初年，兵荒马乱，李景修希望紫庸子承父业，支撑李家祖产，还欲强逼紫庸迎娶青梅竹马的山西姑娘玉环做二房。 紫庸在国外多年，深知国内教育落后，无心从商，执意教书育人。随着家庭矛盾逐渐升级，紫庸无奈之下毅然决然带妻儿离家出走，来到县城做了一名教书匠。李景修积郁成疾，终一病亡故，紫庸悲痛之余也渐悟家国大业的孰轻孰重，痛定思痛后临危受命，支撑起了李家旁大的家业。 商场如战场，在尔虞我诈中，紫庸本着诚信经商和先进的科学技术在诸多晋商中逐渐崭露头角。由于出色的成绩遭人记恨，李家最大的竞争对手魏立人对紫庸下了毒手，将其绑架并欲加害。 最后经过几番周折，紫庸成功获救，但妻子却因死于难产。 为了能造福一方百姓，紫庸不计前嫌，与魏家联手经商，终成就一方伟业。
