快枪手马林是东北军张学良的保镖，因不满张学良消极抗日，毅然回到家乡东北靠山屯。张学良立即派他的相好杨梅去追他回来。当时东北土匪多如牛毛，但因为有快枪手马林，多年来靠山屯一直安然无恙。谁知马林几年前教训过的一个土匪鲁大如今已经做大，他强奸了马林的妻子秋菊，借以羞辱马林。马林回到家，见秋菊已经生下一子，遂决定休妻，然后与鲁大决战。但乡亲们在鲁大的淫威威逼下，都不敢帮助马林，只有被休的妻子秋菊愿意帮助他战胜土匪后再离开。马林由此想到秋菊的好和委屈，不由得感到内疚和惭愧。虽然秋菊是当年逃荒路上捡来童养媳，岁数又比他大，两个人很难说有什么感情，但秋菊的大义凛然还是让他感动。最后，马林送走杨梅，与秋菊联手并肩与土匪决战，全歼匪帮，夫妻也壮烈牺牲，杨梅回来，感慨无奈，抚养了秋菊的孩子。
