女主人工思榆的悲惨经历.因为思榆的失误,小云从楼梯上摔了下来死亡.思榆的母亲大受打击离开人世.后来思榆来到天津,在当时的社会思榆因为找不到工作差点饿死街头.最后王光夫妇收养了她,并且还好心地认她做女儿,久违的爱和呵护让思榆重新找到了家的感觉.王光夫妇的女儿小玉漂亮美丽,是"光英中学"的校花,刁蛮任性.后来到了故事高潮,王光夫妇惨遭杀害,从此思榆为了报恩活着,她照顾小玉,因为她觉得她的到来给这个家带来不幸,王光夫妇对她有救命之恩.他们临终前把小玉托付给可怜的思榆.思榆面对妹妹的谩骂折磨,仍然选择坚持着照顾她.后来她去靠洗衣服挣钱养活妹妹...为了小玉,她失去了爱情和友情,和一群做妈妈的人在一起洗衣服.失去自我的她,只为报恩而活.最后的结局揭开:原来王光夫妇的死是他们自己造成的.他们收养思榆也是利用她在他们死后照顾小玉……
