迟家世代经商，很有背景。顾家书香门第，也颇有身份。迟家少爷迟瑞迎娶顾家小姐顾知夏轰动全城。这顾知夏仿若惊鸿仙子，让迟瑞一见倾心。可就在洞房花烛之时，纵横江湖的马贼向天闯入了新房，要带走知夏，原来两人早已私定终生。\r迟瑞阻止了向天的行动，并且在警察的包围中，将向天乱枪打死。\r知夏被发现有了身孕，自然是向天的孩子。知夏请求迟家休妻，迟母自是愿意，可迟瑞说什么也不肯，硬说知夏是他的女人，只有他可以处置知夏。他要知夏打掉孩子，留在迟家。\r知夏誓死不从，终于顽强地将孩子生了下来。迟瑞又另娶有一妻幼蓉，幼蓉知道迟瑞对知夏的情意，于是联合迟母，对知夏百般折磨，知夏忍气吞声，迟瑞也睁一只眼，闭一只眼，因为他对知夏的感情也十分复杂，知夏让他又爱又恨。
