一个叫埃利的女人在冬天驱车来到了冰天雪地的北大西洋岛，旅馆的女老板对她进行了热情的招待，女老板帮她收拾好房间，问她为什么在冬天来到这里，埃利回答说为了休假。埃利在旅店安顿下来后来到便利店，挑选了几样生说用品，主动向售货员自我介绍，但售货员只是礼貌的向她笑笑，机械的回答了她的问题。这里的人们以捕猎豹为生，年幼的孩童自小跟着父辈们一起上船，被叔父们诱导着饮下烈酒，当一个真正的男子汉。埃利见到了这种状况后疑惑的想要知道，为什么他们一群大人逼着一个孩子喝酒，可显然，在这个地方，所谓的教育方式便是，男子汉就要饮烈酒。她跟家里打了个电话，电话那头母亲絮絮叨叨，一堆嘱咐，她让母亲放心，说自己住在朋友这里。海水汹涌冰冷，海岸白茫一片，她站在海边，吹着海风，思绪飘向了远方。这里的居民赖以生存的方式是进行海中捕捞，海产品能换来生存的资本，所有人都喜气洋洋的迎接大自然丰厚的馈赠，人们团结互助，彼此帮助。而对于埃利这位城里人来说，过度的捕捞无异于杀生过重，她内心很受触动。尤其是当她正对着一只漂亮怕人的海报拍照并想要摸一下它的时候，被本地的土著村民看到，这只海报依旧不能摆脱被人猎杀的命运。埃利在岛上见识到了民众的风土人情，见到了人民彼此之间淳朴的生活方式，在这样一个天海相接的地方，在这样一个与大自然彼此亲近的地方，埃利终于将自己的内心交付于大自然，得到了彻底的心灵解脱。
