春节将至。西岭村党支部书记巧凤带领大家成立了“养殖联合体”。巧凤的丈夫福生为了帮助巧凤工作，从城里找来一个收猪大户胡二来。在卖猪的过程中，巧凤发现胡二来的秤有问题，巧凤拒绝卖猪，为此夫妻之间产生了矛盾，村党支部为了保护群众的利益，决定“养殖联合体”自行屠宰和销售，以诚信的原则直接面对市场。巧凤带领西岭的乡亲们来到市场之后受到了顾客的欢迎，胡二来贩卖的注水猪肉受到了顾客的抵制，于是胡二来使用了各种手段迫使巧凤离开市场。由于巧凤对“养殖联合体”负责，对顾客以诚相待，打出了品牌，胡二来走投无路，恼羞成怒，恣意闹事，恶人先告状威胁巧凤。巧凤没有退缩，不顾福生的劝阻，对胡二来一伙的假冒伪劣行为进行更坚决的斗争。福生发现了胡二来骗秤的秘密，明白了巧凤的判断是正确的。胡二来扣押了福生，迫使巧凤在不平等协约上签字。巧凤坚决不妥协，被胡二来打伤，最终胡二来受到了法律的严惩。除夕之夜，沉浸在喜悦气氛之中的“养殖联合体”的乡亲们聚集一堂迎接新的一年到来，伴随着新年的鞭炮声，一个陌生人来找巧凤，这个人是胡二来的女儿……该片获得2002年第八届中国电影华表奖评委会奖、优秀女演员奖(于慧)。
